Ceramic/Porcelain OnlaysCeramic/Porcelain Onlays and Crowns:When the surface area of a tooth to be restored is too large to utilize a composite resin restoration one must consider an onlay or crown (cap).A porcelain onlay, when indicated, is more conservative than a crown. An onlay simplistically speaking covers either one or all the cusps of a tooth and is esthetically designed to prevent the tooth from fracturing. A porcelain crown covers the entire tooth. Sometimes to esthetically change the shape and color of a tooth a porcelain crown may be the restoration of choice. For more information see crowns. Both restorations are bonded to the existing tooth structure. However, for anterior teeth, there is another option, porcelain veneers. Reprinted from AGD.
