What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown, often called a “cap,” is a custom restoration that fits over a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are typically recommended when a filling won’t provide enough support or protection.
Crowns are designed to:
  • Reinforce weakened or cracked teeth
  • Restore function after a large cavity or root canal
  • Improve cosmetic flaws like discoloration or misshapen teeth
  • Anchor dental bridges or complete implant restorations
At Boca Raton Cosmetic Dentist™, crowns are made from durable materials like porcelain, zirconia, metal, or gold, depending on your needs. Porcelain is often preferred for its lifelike appearance and ability to match your natural teeth.

Common Uses of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are one of the most versatile treatments in modern dentistry. Here are some of the most common reasons we recommend them:

Dental Implant Restorations

If you’ve lost a tooth and received a dental implant, a crown completes your restoration. The custom-made crown is attached to the implant abutment, providing a permanent, functional, and natural-looking replacement. It’s designed to blend seamlessly with your surrounding teeth and restore your bite strength.

Dental Bridges

Crowns are anchors on either side of a dental bridge, filling the gap left by a missing tooth. These crowns hold the bridge securely in place, ensuring stability and comfort while restoring full chewing function and aesthetics.

Common Uses of Dental Crowns

Misshapen Teeth

If you have a tooth that is naturally small, worn down, or uneven, a crown can be placed to enhance its appearance and function. Crowns create a uniform look, helping you achieve a balanced, symmetrical smile that feels and looks great.

Broken or Fractured Teeth

When a tooth is broken or cracked, a dental crown can cover the remaining healthy structure, preventing further damage. It also restores the tooth’s appearance and strength, allowing you to bite and chew with confidence again.

Caps for Root Canal-Treated Teeth

After a root canal, a tooth becomes more fragile. A dental crown is placed over the treated tooth to protect it from fractures and to restore its normal function and appearance. This “cap” helps maintain long-term stability and prevents reinfection.

What to Expect During the Crown Procedure

What to Expect During the Crown Procedure

  • Step 1: Consultation and Diagnosis: Dr. Winderbaum will begin with a comprehensive exam and imaging to determine if a crown is the right solution. We’ll discuss your treatment goals, explain material options, and create a customized care plan.
  • Step 2: Tooth Preparation: The tooth is gently reshaped to ensure a precise fit, removing any decay or old filling material. We then take digital impressions of your teeth to design your crown with exact detail.
  • Step 3: Temporary Crown: While your permanent crown is being crafted at the lab, a temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth and maintain comfort.
  • Step 4: Final Placement: Once your permanent crown is ready, typically within 1 to 2 weeks, you’ll return to our office for final placement. We’ll ensure the crown fits comfortably, matches your natural tooth color, and is securely bonded in place.
Some patients may be candidates for same-day crowns using CEREC or other digital technology. During your consultation, we’ll let you know if that’s an option.

Types of Dental Crowns We Offer

We offer a variety of dental crown materials based on your needs, cosmetic preferences, and budget:

Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns are perfect for restoring front teeth due to their excellent translucency and lifelike appearance. They closely mimic the look of natural enamel, making them a popular choice for patients seeking a cosmetic enhancement. These crowns are stain-resistant and biocompatible, offering beauty and function without compromising the integrity of your natural smile.

Zirconia Crowns

Zirconia crowns are known for their exceptional strength. They are ideal for molars or patients who grind their teeth. They resist chips, cracks, and wear while maintaining a tooth-colored appearance. These crowns offer excellent durability and longevity, blending aesthetics with superior functionality, especially in high-pressure areas of the mouth like the back teeth.

Types of Dental Crowns We Offer (1)

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns

PFM crowns combine a strong metal base with a porcelain outer layer for enhanced strength and natural-looking aesthetics. They are often used for both front and back teeth, offering a balanced solution for function and appearance. The porcelain coating helps the crown blend in seamlessly with your existing teeth, while the metal ensures durability.

Gold Crowns

Gold crowns are exceptionally durable, resistant to wear, and biocompatible with gum tissues. Although less common for cosmetic purposes, they remain an excellent choice for restoring molars due to their longevity and strength. Gold is gentle on opposing teeth and ideal for patients who prioritize function, especially in hard-to-see areas of the mouth.

Same Day Dental Crowns

For those seeking convenience, we offer same-day dental crowns. Using advanced technology, Dr. Winderbaum can craft and place your custom crown in a single visit, saving you time without sacrificing quality. Whether you need a porcelain, zirconia, or PFM crown, we ensure a perfect fit and natural appearance with minimal wait time.

Dr. Winderbaum will help you choose the best option based on your case.
